There are only three broad categories of kitchen cabinets: base, wall and specialty cabinets.

Base cabinets provide both storage space and support for a work surface. Base cabinets measure 24 inches deep and 34 1/2-inches high. Adding a countertop brings them up to 36 inches - not coincidentally the height of most dishwashers, trash compactors and slide-in ranges. Base cabinets usually have one drawer at the top, but some, called base drawer units, consist entirely of drawers and are especially useful near the sink and range.

Wall cabinets, so named because they typically mount on the walls, also can hang from the ceiling over a peninsula or island. They range from 12 to 15 inches deep and 12 to 33 inches in height. Shorter 12- to 15-inch-high wall cabinets usually mount above tall refrigerators and high-oven ranges. 18-

inch-high cabinets fit over standard ranges, over the sink and over smaller refrigerators.

Specialty cabinets fit under sinks and drop-in ranges, above and below wall ovens, and just about anywhere else you need tailored storage. For under the sink, you can choose either a sink base cabinet or a sink front. The sink base is a complete box, with a floor and back; the sink front has a face frame, doors and floor, but no sides or back.

Counters run a close second to floors in the amount of punishment they have to stand up to. What with chopping and pounding, heat and cold, stains, moisture and three-times-a-day cleaning, counters are a kitchen´s workbenches. Counter materials are many and various, but they fall into these three categories.
